Advice & Guidance - Pregnancy & Contraception

Pregnancy tests can be obtained from Sexual health/Family Planning clinics and some voluntary sector agencies for free. They can also be bought from any pharmacy. Those under 25 years can also obtain pregnancy tests from Cornerhouse and their school nurse. Pregnancy tests will not show accurate result until at least 2 weeks after conception.(when your period is due)

Women can get a pill for emergency contraception from Sexual Health or Family Planning clinics, their GP or free from certain pharmacies. A pill for emergency contraception can be given up to 72 hours after unprotected sex to reduce your risk of pregnancy. You could also be fitted with an IUD which is far more effective. This is available from Family Planning Clinics, some GUM clinics and some GPs. Ring Conifer House  01482 336 336 to find out where and when.

If you need emergency contraception and had sex longer than 72 hours ago but less than 5 days ago you will need to attend a Sexual Health/Family planning clinic/ GP  for emergency contraception to reduce your risk of pregnancy. The best method is an emergency IUD. Ring Conifer House on 01482 336336to find out where you can go for an IUD.

If worried about pregnancy and under 25 years of age you can attend Cornerhouse, GUM, Family Planning, your GP, other voluntary sector agencies or school nurses to have a pregnancy  test /discuss what to do next (if over 25 as above except Cornerhouse, which is for under 25's only). If you are unsure what to do you can be referred for specialist counselling to help you to make the right decision for you.
