Women can get a pill for emergency contraception from Sexual Health or Family Planning clinics, their GP or free from certain pharmacies. A pill for emergency contraception can be given up to 72 hours after unprotected sex to reduce your risk of pregnancy. You could also be fitted with an IUD which is far more effective. If you need emergency contraception and it happened longer than 72 hours but less than 5 days you will need to attend a Sexual Health/Family planning clinic/ GP for emergency contraception to reduce your risk of pregnancy. Even if it is some time ago since you had unprotected sex or have had more than 1 episode of unprotected sex since your last period it may in some circumstances be possible to fit a intra uterine device ('coil') to reduce your risk of becoming pregnant.
